Sunsets & Manatees with Salty Siren Tours

The world is full of stunningly beautiful places and Florida is certainly no exception. I’ve had the privilege of visiting some truly magical destinations that left me in absolute awe and amazement. Little slices of heaven on earth, if you will. If you’ve ever had the opportunity to experience the perfection of a sunset on Kings Bay in Crystal River, you probably already know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t, you absolutely should.

Kings Bay is a 600-acre Florida gem located at the headwaters of Crystal River, which flows approximately 6 miles out from the bay to the mouth of Gulf. It’s part of a first-magnitude spring system, comprised of more than 70 freshwater springs, and is the second largest in the state. Visitors flock here from around the world to experience the wonder of sparkling blue waters, swimming with manatees, hunting for scallops, kayaking, fishing, and a great deal more.

I celebrated my 44th birthday in May (last month) and was absolutely spoiled by my husband and friends with a sunset tour in Kings Bay. Kim and Ed from Salty Siren Tours and Charters are the absolute coolest, most ecologically responsible captains and guides in the industry. They also happen to be some of our very closest friends. Lucky Ducks, we are.

The day started out notably overcast, so we weren’t entirely sure how the sunset would pan out based on first impressions. Let me tell you – Mother Nature did NOT disappoint. Instead, it gifted us with the most stunning sky that unfurled before us like a masterwork painted by a divine hand. There we were, caught in a moment of unearthly stillness – the sky brushed with sweeping strokes of molten gold, soft lavender, and fire-kissed coral, each hue melting into the next like silk unraveling in slow motion. The sun was a blazing ember resting just above the horizon, as it cast its last gentle light across the glassy surface of the water. The air felt suspended in reverence. Save for a few boats going by, I was able to savor the hush of the moment. It was like a sacred quiet that envelops everything, where times slows down and the only movement is the sun sinking into its watery cradle. It was more than just a sunset – it was a living embodiment of peace and balance, and the world exhaling after another day. It was the most beautiful birthday I could have ever hoped for.

Earlier this year, while the manatees were still seeking refuge from the cold, we also had the luxury of a magical manatee tour with Kim and Ed on two of Salty Siren’s beautifully equipped and heated boats. The experience is so much more than an adventure, it’s nature’s purest form of therapy – a healing experience for body, mind, and spirit. My husband’s father passed away in January, and we were so sorely in need of something rejuvenating after reeling from the loss and attending his memorial service in March. It truly couldn’t have been more timely.

A magical and therapeutic manatee tour with Salty Siren in Kings Bay.

When you slip into the water, it enfolds you in a quiet embrace – clear, cold, and impossibly serene. The transparency of the spring-fed water is easily pierced by the sunlight as it dances through the ripples like liquid gold. Each stroke as you swim is intentionally gentle and intended not to disrupt the world around you. Each breath you take through your snorkel becomes a meditation, slow and grounding.

And then, there they are.

The manatees appear like underwater monks – silent, calm, and infinitely gentle. Their massive bodies glide without effort. Every movement is deliberate and slow, as if reminding you to breathe, to soften, and to let go. They approach with curiosity, not fear. One may brush past you like a floating cloud. Another might roll lazily onto its back, inviting a belly rub with the trust of a creature who knows no harm. And in these moments, surrounded by these gentle giants, something shifts. Your heartbeat slows. The chatter in your mind quiets. Stress and pain dissolve away into the water. The manatees, ancient and unhurried, seem to carry the wisdom of a quieter world – one where being is enough.

This is therapy that no human can replicate. It’s the healing powers of stillness, presence, and a connection to something far older and deeper than yourself. When you emerge from the water, it feels like waking from a beautiful, weightless dream – lighter, clearer, more whole.

A Salty Siren manatee tour is more than just an encounter with wildlife. It’s a return to peace – a reminder that nature is and always has been the best kind of medicine. If you’re in search of an experience that uplifts and rekindles the soul, reach out to Kim and Ed in Crystal River, Florida. I assure you, you won’t be disappointed.
